Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"Nasi bungkusnya mantap! The taste is accurate to actual Indonesian food I had in Indonesia. Even they have an atmosphere of a typical Indonesia food court. They have kerupuk blek to go with nasi bungkus and that is a win. Definitely a place to go when you are feeling homesick."
"Their nasi bungkus is their selling point. Their sambal is fire and on point. Everything is fresh and tastes so good! Recommend that you should queue up before you sit down and therefore know exactly what you want to order. You will be given the menu book along with some paper and pen as you queue to write down your order (optional of course if not enough time). Each order will be tagged to a buzzer so you can find a seat indoor or outdoor. Their sitting arrangement gives a fancy food court vibe, lots of tables close to each other. We visited around 11.15 am on a Sunday and the queue grew longer and place was packed by the time we left at 12.15pm. It was somehow organised still and pleasant to dine in. There was a narrow window when the queue was short, at around 12 pm. If you love spicy food with the classic Indonesian spices, you must try this at least once. Amazing! Also, come early, at 11am when they still have everything on their menu so that you don't miss out!"
"Yes, simply the best nasi bungkus/warteg you can get in Melbourne. They have plenty of meat and vegetable options you can order. The staff will take your order and they will assemble and pack your order inside the banana leaf and paper wrap. It's best to come early otherwise you may have to queue for about 30 minutes plus the food preparation time about 20-30 minutes. It's worth the wait though because the food is quite authentic, delicious and affordable."
"best Indonesian nasi bungkus so far. love their cumi hitam pekalongan and dadar jagung, everything just reminds me of home (if you can’t stand spicy food, make sure to tell them to separate the chili—i’ve learned the hard way) they have a really nice view overlooking the botanical garden as well if you’re sitting al fresco!"
"Finally came here after so many recommendations. The foods were great but the rice was too soft, too much water it seems. The combination of mushy rice and curry sauce isn't too pleasant, but fortunately the sambal and the flavour combo from everything else were great. They do require a better service management though. We waited for too long just to order (only 1 cashier) and for the food to come out. I think it would be great if they can have all the foods displayed out front and we can just point and get the food served on our plate right away - the true Warteg style. Having to order from a menu that all text wouldn't be as handy for someone who's not familiar with Indonesian foods."
"Nasi padang smorgasbord. As authentic as you'd get in Manado or Jakarta. Can GM do better in terms of queue management and ambience? Sure. Will mistakes with orders be made? Sometimes. But take that as part of the experience and enjoy the pay-off of amazing cumi-cumi, rendang and kikil. Staff running around and working the best they can ought to be appreciated, not chastised. Grateful to have this Indonesian food Mecca as part of Melbourne dining scene."
"Garam Merica stands out in Melbourne’s crowded food scene by staying true to its roots. The complexity of their sambal and the tenderness of their meats suggest a kitchen that takes its time with traditional techniques. It’s rare to find this level of soul in a casual dining setting. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a genuine taste of Indonesia without the gimmicks."
"One of my favourite authentic Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne. Just moves to new, bigger and easier access than previous place. The food is just a good, delicious and spicy as before. Generous serving and plenty of choices we can pick and choose. Although far from where I live, always come to eat here whenever my family near city."
